Krak des Chevaliers

34.756942, 36.294477

This spectacular Crusader castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the best preserved medieval fortresses in the world. Situated on an imposing spur above the plain, it was named by Lawrence of Arabia as "the finest castle in the world. Certainly the most picturesque I have ever seen - quite marvellous". The Knights of St. John led the construction from 1144 and onwards. It had 13 watch towers, a moat, and the capacity to house 5,000 soldiers. Frescoes from the Crusade times can also be seen.
