Granada is the oldest colonial city in the country with beautiful, highly-coloured colonial buildings. At the city centre, there is the imposing yellow Cathedral of Granada and the museum of San Francisco containing black basalt statues that were carved around 1,000 years ago. The city is situated on the western shore of Lake Nicaragua (Lake Cocibolca) which is the largest fresh water lake in Central America. It takes four hours to cross by boat.
