Orkhon Valley Cultural Landscape

Named as a UNESCO World Heritage Centre, this exceptional landscape of the central Asian Steppes covers an area of 121,967 hectares of grassland. Home to the nomadic people of the region, it is rich in archaeological remains and structures. Among these are the earliest surviving Buddhist monastery, 6th and 7th century Turkish memorial sites, and the 13th - 14th century Mongol Imperial capital of Kharakhorum. Also to be seen are the ruins of Karakorum, Genghis Khan’s capital, where the Xanadu palace may have been sited.
