This UNESCO World Heritage Site was founded in the 16th and 17th centuries as the residence of the Emperor Fasilides and his successors. The city contains a palace surrounded by a 2,953-ft wall, monasteries, churches, stables, and private and public buildings. To the northwest of the city are the two-storey battlemented Fasilades Baths (bathing palace). The bathing pavilion stands on pier arches. Access to the rooms is through a stone bridge that could be raised in times of warfare.
